In newer areas of Pittsburg’s Marina, parking drains to swales, where pollutants in runoff degrade and are filtered, while some rain soaks into soil.

Below left, drains eventually take runoff from swales to the nearby river. But runoff from near a drain at soil level, like the one shown here, is not really treated by the swale. Raised drains would increase effectiveness. The Pittsburg Marina was an early project. Methods are changing.

Above and below right, bricks set without mortar also let some rain soak in.
